Kybella™ New Jersey
Until recently, removal of excess fullness of the submental area (central neck area under the chin), commonly referred to as a “double chin”, could only be accomplished by having a face/neck lift or liposuction. With the FDA’s approval of Kybella, an exciting and effective non-surgical treatment option is now available. We are proud to be among the first practices in the country to offer Kybella, the first and only FDA approved non-surgical treatment for submental fullness or “double chin”.
Kybella is administered by a series of injections directly into the fat under the chin. The active ingredient in Kybella, deoxychloric acid, destroys fat cells, enabling Dr. Glatt and Nurse Injector Jennifer DeMaio to re-sculpt the submental area. Deoxychloric acid is a synthetic (non-human and non-animal) form of a naturally occurring molecule in the body that aids in the breakdown and absorption of dietary fat. Studies have shown that results of treatment with Kybella last at least five years, likely longer, and retreatment is not expected to be needed. Even if one were to gain weight, results have been shown to persist.
Prior to treatment with Kybella the submental area will be numbed with cream and/or a small injection of local anesthesia. Each treatment consists of twenty to thirty tiny injections, and typically takes fifteen to twenty minutes. Two treatment sessions, spaced six weeks apart, are required, though some patients may require up to four treatments for the best outcome. Dr. Glatt and Nurse Injector Jennifer DeMaio customize each treatment to the individual patient’s needs to achieve the optimal aesthetic result for every patient.
Swelling typically occurs one to two days after treatment with Kybella, and can last up to one week. The most commonly reported side effects are bruising, redness of the area and numbness, all of which subside spontaneously in a short time.
The ideal candidate is a male or female with mild to severe submental fullness and good skin elasticity. Kybella is contraindicated for patients who have previously had facelift, necklift or liposuction of the submental area, and may only be administered to those over the age of eighteen.

- What is Kybella?
Kybella is a non-invasive, injectable treatment for submental fullness, often referred to as a “double chin”. The submental area is the central region of the neck under the chin.
- Is Kybella new?
Kybella has been used in Canada and Europe for over ten years. After 20 clinical studies involving over 2600 patients, Kybella received approval from the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in May of 2015. Kybella is the first and only FDA approved nonsurgical treatment for moderate to severe submental fat.
- How does Kybella work?
Kybella is a synthetic formulation of a naturally occurring molecule in the body that aids in the breakdown and absorption of dietary fat. Fat cells injected with Kybella are destroyed, and thus cannot store or accumulate fat.
- How is Kybella administered?
After numbing the submental area, Kybella is administered by a series of injections directly into the fat under the chin. Each treatment consists of twenty to thirty small injections, and takes approximately fifteen to twenty minutes, after numbing is complete.
- Are there any pre-treatment requirements?
Prior to treatment with Kybella, you will be asked to refrain from taking aspirin, products containing aspirin, or anti-inflammatory medications (e.g. Motrin, Advil, ibuprofen, etc) for two weeks. You will also be asked to refrain from red wine for 24 hours prior to your treatment.
- Are there any side effects after Kybella treatments?
The most common side effects after treatment with Kybella are swelling, bruising, numbness and/or redness in the treated area, which subside in a short time. These occur most frequently after the first treatment. Although there is no actual “downtime” after the administration of Kybella, swelling or bruising must be considered if one has an event planned within ten to fourteen days after treatment.
- Are there any restrictions after receiving Kybella?
You may not work-out for 24 hours following treatment.
- How many treatments are needed?
Dr. Glatt customizes every Kybella treatment to achieve the optimal aesthetic outcome. Two treatment sessions are required, although some patients may need additional sessions to achieve the best results. Most patients may expect to require two to four treatment sessions to achieve optimal results.
- Who is a candidate for treatment with Kybella?
The best candidate for Kybella treatment is a person with mild to severe submental fullness and good skin elasticity. Kybella may only be administered to patients over eighteen years of age, and is contraindicated in patients who are pregnant or nursing. Patients who have had facelift, neck lift or liposuction of the submental area may not be appropriate candidates for treatment with Kybella.
- How long does Kybella last?
Studies show that the results of Kybella treatments last at least five years and likely longer. Retreatment is not expected to be needed, even with moderate weight gain over time.
- What is the cost of treatment with Kybella?
Since treatment with Kybella is customized to each patient’s individual needs, the price will vary depending upon the number of treatment sessions needed.
- Why don’t all physicians offer Kybella?
Allergan, the makers of Kybella, chose only a small number of physicians in the country to administer Kybella. Board Certified Plastic Surgeon Brian S. Glatt, MD, FACS, is an experienced, highly skilled injector who performs thousands of injections yearly, and was chosen by Kythera to be part of this select group.
