The FDA has approved Botox as a treatment for patients who experience migraines.
Brian S. Glatt, MD, FACS, of Morristown, NJ is now able to treat his patients who suffer from migraine headaches with Botox. It has always been thought that since Botox relaxes the injected muscles; it will dull, reduce, or even eliminate migraines. Per the FDA guidelines, Botox injections for migraine patients can be administered to the head and/or neck region, at certain specific target points, every 12 weeks.
The FDA approved this newer use of Botox based on two studies of more than 1,300 patients who received either a Botox injection or an injection containing no active ingredients. Patients who received Botox reported slightly fewer “headache days” than patients given the placebo treatment. In the more significant of the two studies, patients receiving Botox reported about two fewer headache days than patients who did not receive the drug.
