Perhaps you’ve heard about the newest reality show, “Bridalplasty” where contestants compete to win plastic surgery procedures.
Every bride wants to look her best on her wedding day, but deciding to have plastic surgery is not a game. It is an important and yes, sometimes, life changing decision. Pre-wedding plastic surgery procedures are hardly uncommon. There is certainly nothing abnormal about wanting to change the shape of your nose, or increase or decrease the size of your breasts. It is also quite common for the mother of the bride to have Botox or Juvederm to refresh her look prior to the big day. The concept that having a total body makeover with the expectation of becoming “perfect” for the “Perfect Wedding Day” is when the “unreality” of this reality show becomes dangerous. It is always important to discuss your surgical goals and options with a Board Certified Plastic Surgeon, to enable you to make an informed decision prior to proceeding with surgery. The American Society of Plastic Surgery code of ethics does not condone “winning” plastic surgery procedures as a result of a contest. Informed, realistic discussions should be held with the plastic surgeon of your choice to determine which procedure may be best for you.
The old expression “beauty is in the eye of the beholder” is still relevant in today’s world, but the beholder must be you. Having plastic surgery to meet other people’s expectations can only lead to disappointment.
