Breast Lift Surgery

The American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) reports that the number of breast lift (mastopexy) surgeries performed grew by 70% since 2000, outpacing breast implant surgery two-to-one. In 2013, more than 90,000 breast lift procedures were performed by ASPS member surgeons. According to the new statistics, women between the ages of 30 and 54 made up nearly 70% of the breast lift procedures performed in 2013.

As women age, their breasts begin to lose their youthful shape and firmness. Pregnancy, breastfeeding, weight gain and loss, and decreased skin elasticity are all factors that contribute to “droopy”, sagging breasts.

Breast lift, known as mastopexy, elevates and reshapes the breasts by removing excess skin and tightening the supporting tissue, resulting in breasts that are uplifted and firmer. If the areola (the dark skin surrounding the nipple) has stretched or drooped, it can be repositioned and/or reduced during this procedure.

While a breast lift may be performed on its own, this surgery will not significantly change breast size or round out the upper part of the breast. If fuller, larger breasts are desired in addition to a lift, a breast augmentation with implants is recommended.

Current breast implant options are not just limited to the filler material of the breast implant; saline or silicone gel. Round or anatomically shaped implants are available, as well as implants with varying projections, from moderate to full. The patient’s desired outcome, as well as breast characteristics and current breast measurements are all considered by Dr. Glatt to choose the appropriate implant for each patient. This is a highly individualized discussion to ensure the optimal results are achieved.

For women with breasts that are too large, a mastopexy may be performed in conjunction with breast reduction surgery. During this procedure excess skin and breast tissue is removed, in addition to “raising” the breasts to a location higher on the chest.
