Chin Implant Surgery

Published on May 1, 2015

A recessed or “weak” chin can affect the look of one’s entire face and profile.  A weak chin can also make a person’s nose appear larger or neckline shorter and less defined.  Chin implant surgery, known as genioplasty, improves facial proportions by insertion of a solid, durable implant to enhance the chin.  By restoring proper proportions, the resulting facial harmony illustrates how dramatic improvement can be achieved with this subtle change to a person’s profile.  Chin implant surgery can be performed through an incision in the mouth or through a tiny incision in the neck, just under the chin, in an area which is not visible.  Dr. Glatt commonly uses semi-solid implants, which are firm and rubbery in feel.  The implant is placed directly onto the bone of the chin, in a pocket just large enough to accommodate the implant to prevent any rotation or malposition.   Often performed as an individual procedure, chin implant surgery may also be performed in conjunction with rhinoplasty surgery to provide better balance to the patient’s profile.

Prior to chin implant surgery, Board Certified Plastic Surgeon Brian S. Glatt, MD, FACS utilizes the Vectra 3-D Imaging system to allow the patient to view a simulation of his/her post-operative outcome.  Vectra 3-D Imaging also aids Dr. Glatt in his selection of the most appropriate implant size and shape.

Following chin implant surgery a patient will experience some discomfort, swelling, and possibly bruising in the affected area for several days. While complications are rare, patients can minimize potential problems by carefully following Dr. Glatt’s pre-surgical and post-operative instructions.
