Eyelid Surgery (Blepharoplasty)

Published on April 11, 2014

Regardless of how good you may feel, your eyes may show the world something else. Your eyes express what you are feeling – happiness, sadness, or confusion – and are usually the first thing people notice when seeing you. Your eyes are also one of the first parts of your face to show signs of aging – upper eyelid skin laxity, under eye bags and wrinkles may make you seem angry, tired and/or older than you are. Upper and lower eyelid surgery, known as blepharoplasty, can rejuvenate your eyelids and the surrounding area, resulting in a more youthful and well rested appearance.

The incisions made during blepharoplasty surgery are inconspicuously placed and essentially unnoticeable. The upper eyelid incision is hidden within the crease itself, and after healing, cannot be seen. For the lower eyelids, excess skin and prominent pockets of fat are removed or sculpted to reduce the appearance of puffiness and bags. In some cases, lower eyelid surgery can be performed without any incision on the skin! The transconjunctival blepharoplasty involves an incision on the under surface of the lower eyelids and results in no scar at all. Some bruising and swelling may occur after surgery, but this is temporary and will subside within a week or two. After removal of your sutures in the first week post-op, any residual bruising may be covered with concealer.
